This one is going to be fun.
In some cases, an entrance theme can make or break a wrestler. Imagine If Undertaker never got his mysterious theme, “Rest in Peace,” which potentially could have changed his whole career.
This will be me going through some of my favorite theme songs and why they are in my playlists on Apple Music (I don’t like Spotify).
A lot of wrestlers get original songs, they are often a lot cheaper for companies to use. However, AEW makes a habit of using licensed songs. A standout to me was when Orange Cassidy used “Where Is My Mind?” by Pixies. This is one of my favorite songs, even if it had no affiliation with wrestling. Maybe I am biased, but it fits Orange Cassidy’s carefree persona.
One extraordinary song is Chris Jericho’s “Judas,” he literally made the song. Jericho is the lead singer of the band Fozzy. I also respect his effort to keep wrestling fame away from his music.
Beyond it being unique, he sings it, the song explains his career so well. “Judas” is about someone who has fallen from grace, asking if anything is left to save. This matches Chris Jericho as the battered veteran heel is in the closing chapters of his career.
What do I listen to in the gym? I am so glad you asked! For best results, I recommend listening to Batista’s theme, “I Walk Alone”. Especially on max volume, something about this song just gets me. I don’t know how to explain it besides saying it gets me hyped up.
If you want to see something funny, watch Xavier Woods fanboy over Batista and sing it.
Look in my eyes. What do you see? It’s the “Cult of Personality” CM Punk. Everywhere this guy goes, drama follows. You could say he has a bit of a personality, hahaha. The song is just fitting, I play it on my drive to work often. It also plays in the last episode of The Walking Dead, a show that holds a special place in my heart.
No song in wrestling or wrestler better defines the late 2000s than Jeff Hardy.
His theme song, “No More Words,” captivates this edgy era and films like Transformers. Things like this are just incredibly nostalgic for me.
Let me tell you something Mean Jean!
I do not necessarily love Hulk Hogan’s theme song, “Real American,” but it has become a joke with some friends. Like Jeff Hardy’s theme, it captured the time. It is such a patriotic song for the original megastar of wrestling.
I could not make this blog post without mentioning Triple H’s theme song, “The Game,” made by Motorhead. First off, what a cool name for a song and gimmick. It doesn’t get much better than having Motorhead make your theme song, and he became close friends with them! They even made Triple H a second theme song when he became a corporate heel.
DU DU DU, ITS JOHN CENA. This one is 100% biased, but I bet many would agree Cena’s theme, “The Time Is Now,” is one of the all-time greats. Like Chris Jericho, Cena also sang his theme song. Over the years, the song has become a meme. Unfortunately, we will never be able to SEE John Cena perform it.
It was hard to choose, but Edge’s theme song has to be my favorite. He had a few versions, but “Metalingus” is simply magical.
When he was young, Edge wanted to be a wrestler. Growing up, he designed ring gear and still does to this day. He made a lot of hard sacrifices to achieve his dreams. When you know this is what he wanted to do, a song about chasing your dreams and how “Everything has come to life” hits a little differently.
The song was also played in arguably my favorite moment in wrestling. When I started watching back in 2011, Edge had to retire shortly after to a neck injury. Nine years later, I was watching the Royal Rumble, and his theme song started playing. He was a surprise entrant. I stood up in shock!
What made it even better was how emotional Edge was to regain his dream after so long. I highly recommend you check it out. It’s such a special moment, and I am sure it will live in his memories forever.
He recently updated his song to change the opening “You think you know me” to his wife saying it. Edge is truly completing his dreams.
